The Reason Gloss is so in Right Now.
Way back in 2008, the hip hop queen Lil Mamma stated “My lipgloss is hot, my lipgloss be poppin.” There are so many reasons why lip gloss is coming back as a makeup trend in 2019. Gloss is not just for summer months! In fact, lip gloss is the perfect winter accessory to give your makeup look a glowing pop of colour and keep your lips hydrated. Brands are constantly improving their formulas to give us the best quality glosses. Lip gloss is also super versatile. Using certain shades and intensities can make your face look fresher and softer or make your lips the focal point of your make up look.

Many beauty retailers are currently focusing on bringing back trends from the 90s. With celebrities like the Kardashians popularising the ‘pouty’ and plump lip look, gloss is once again becoming all the rage! There’s no other lip product provides shine, moisture, and volume all in one (Erdogan, 2016). Glossy lips create a radiant, hydrated aesthetic helping your lips look healthy. This look cannot be achieved by using matte lipsticks.
In the past, many people have opted for a matte lipstick, as lip gloss was too sticky and messy to apply. However, matte lipsticks can dry out your lips, especially if you already have dry skin. This can become very uncomfortable after long periods of time.
Lip gloss formulas are now long lasting, reducing the need to reapply after eating and drinking. Lip gloss also meets the demand for hydrating, moisturising, and vitamin-enriched products. Unlike matte lipsticks, gloss is easy to apply as there isn’t need for a lip liner or a crisp edge. Gloss is a great option for beginners or anyone not confident in applying lipstick.
Glossy skin has become one of the biggest makeup crazes of yet, seen on celebrities such as Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala in 2019. By using illuminating or glossy products to create shine on the high points of the face we can create a dewy, healthy glow. Putting gloss on the top of the cheekbones can make the face appear slimmer and more lifted.

One of my favourite glosses is Fenty by Rihanna Gloss Bomb in the shade “Fenty Glow”. I love putting this on to add some colour to my makeup. It is super long lasting and keeps it shine all day with no need to re-apply. In a universal rosy nude shade, the lip gloss is infused with Shea butter and a subtle gold shimmer that suits all skin tones. Additionally, the jumbo-sized applicator makes it super easy to slick on! This gloss also comes in a flirty pink and icy white.
If you are a first timer wearing lip gloss it would be a good idea to start with a neutral or clear gloss that doesn’t have any glitter in it. This can help with the transition from matte to gloss. Make sure you jump on board with the latest beauty trend and give gloss a go! You won’t regret it!
